Ace radio and TV personality, Kofi Adjorlolo is encouraging DJs and radio presenters to take money from musicians who come to them for help in promoting their craft because there is nothing wrong with the practice.
“I don’t see anything wrong with ‘payola’, people tell me that payola is a bribe or something but I don’t see it like that”. Kofi Adjorlolo told Hammer Nti on the program “Hammer Time” on Pure Fm in Kumasi during an interview monitored by sikapaonlineradio
He claimed he also received gifts from Kojo Antwi for playing his music hence he can’t term that as a bribe.
Kofi Adjorlolo thinks though money is important if musician approaches DJs to play their music they must look out for the quality of the work. According to him, no matter how much one takes from a musician, when the music is bad, they must refuse to play it on air as they could ruin their careers airing bad content.
“I take Payola in the first place because of how quality one’s music is”, Kofi Adjorlolo revealed in his interview adding that the first payola he took was from Daddy Lumber and it was a huge sum of money.
Meanwhile, both mainstream musicians and up-coming have criticized the act describing it a ‘bribe’. Some also argue that this act on the part of radio personalities has made it impossible for good musicians who carry high-quality content to reach the public since they might not have what it takes to bribe DJs and radio presenters.
