Chasing The Wind - Daily Devotional

"I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." – Ecclesiastes 1:14 NIV

What lies ahead? What can we expect in the new year? In many ways, it is helpful to plan, think about the future, consider the goals we want to achieve, and the best way to utilize our resources and time.

At the same time, the Bible reminds us of how little we know. No matter how much we plan, we just “know in part.” In reality, we all merely see “a reflection as in a mirror” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

We can gain perspective on the future by considering the past. What were our expectations a year ago? What did we wish we would have known about the future? What have we learned? Looking back, we can realize how often we spent our time and energy on efforts that had little lasting value. How many pursuits have been like chasing the wind?

The Bible reminds us that God knows the future. He knows the end from the beginning. And He knows “what is still to come” (Isaiah 46:10). He knows which of our efforts will have lasting value and which will be a waste of time. And He knows how we should be spending our time, energies, and resources.

Today, ask God to give you His perspective and the right priorities. Commit your life to Him. Don’t spend this new year chasing after the wind. Seek the things that will last and matter in eternity.

Prayer

Father, give me Your perspective on my life. I dedicate my time, talents, and treasures to You. Keep me from pursuing vain things. In Jesus’ name, amen.
